Prematurity Awareness Month

Prematurity Awareness Month

In the United States, 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely each year. During November, we celebrate Prematurity Awareness Month, a time to recognize and support the families of these children. Prematurity can bring unexpected challenges, but with the right care and support, families can go through this journey with confidence. At Essex County OB/GYN we are proud to provide specialized care for premature babies and their families, offering compassionate, expert support every step of the way.

What is Prematurity?

Prematurity refers to any birth that occurs before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Every pregnancy is unique, but some common risk factors for preterm birth include:

  • Multiple pregnancies (twins or triplets, for example)
  • Certain medical conditions, like high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Lifestyle factors, like smoking or poor nutrition

Premature babies often face unique health challenges, including breathing difficulties, feeding problems, and developmental delays. With specialized care, many of these babies thrive and reach important milestones!

Our Level IIB Special Care Nursery

At Essex County OB/GYN, we’re ready to support babies born after 32 weeks who need a little extra help. Our Level IIB Special Care Nursery, in partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, offers around-the-clock specialized care, including advanced care coordination to address each baby’s individual needs, continuous monitoring by highly trained staff, and respiratory support if needed. This collaborative effort ensures that families have access to the best care while keeping babies close to their parents whenever possible.

Dr. Erika Wallace’s Story

Earlier this year, Dr. Erika Wallace, a provider at Essex County OB/GYN, experienced prematurity firsthand when her daughter, Cora, was born prematurely. Her story exemplifies the exceptional care and dedication provided by our team at Essex County OB/GYN and Beverly Hospital.

“I had the wonderful opportunity to be cared for by my Essex County OB/GYN and Beverly Hospital family for my pregnancy and delivery. Dr. Chuderewicz arrived to the delivery room in her Notre Dame attire as a fellow alum to help welcome my daughter Cora! We received exceptional care every step of the way – the L&D, Postpartum, and Special Care Nursery nurses and staff, my OB and midwife colleagues, our midlevel providers, and our office staff. I couldn’t think of a better team to both work alongside and help take care of our new family!”

Dr. Wallace’s story is a testament to the importance of personalized, expert care every family receives during a premature birth.
