At Essex County OB/GYN, we recognize that past experiences can impact how patients feel during medical visits, especially in gynecologic care. Walking into our office means walking into a safe, compassionate, and judgment-free space, always. Our goal is to help you feel safe, in control, and supported throughout your care.
What is trauma-informed care?
Trauma-informed care means recognizing that many patients have experienced some form of trauma, whether from sexual assault, medical trauma, childbirth experiences, chronic pain, long-term health issues, or other life events, and ensuring that care is delivered in a way that prioritizes safety, trust, and choice. This approach is not just for those who choose to share their experiences – you never have to disclose anything to receive compassionate, thoughtful care. Instead, we focus on creating an environment where all patients feel comfortable, respected, and heard.
Our role is to meet you where you are and adapt care to your needs, and this is how we do it.
You can ask us to pause or stop at any time.
You are always in control of your body and your care. At any point during your visit, whether you’re talking, being examined, or simply feeling overwhelmed, you can ask us to pause or stop. There is no pressure to continue if you are uncomfortable. We will always respect your boundaries, without question or judgment, as your comfort and sense of safety are our top priority.
We explain every step before we do it.
Nothing should feel unexpected during your visit! Before any part of an exam or procedure, we take the time to explain what we’re doing, why it’s important, and what you may feel. This helps reduce anxiety and allows you to feel informed and prepared.
You are always welcome to ask questions, ask for clarification, or request that we go more slowly. Our providers understand that communication is a key part of building trust.
You are never rushed.
Your appointment is your time, and you will never be rushed through an appointment or exam. We understand that some visits may require more time, especially if you’re feeling nervous or have concerns you want to discuss. Taking the time to listen, answer questions, and move at a pace that feels comfortable to you is an essential part of trauma-informed care.
Your comfort guides the pace of your care.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to care. Some patients may feel ready to move forward with an exam, while others may need more time or may choose to delay certain parts of the visit altogether, and both are completely valid.
We can make adjustments to help you feel more comfortable during your visit, including:
- Taking breaks during the exam
- Talking through each step as we go
- Modifying positioning
- Allowing you to guide the pace
Your comfort is central to how we care for you.
