It’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure about your first Pap smear, but it doesn’t have to be scary! At Essex County OB/GYN, we’re here to make sure you feel informed, supported, and at ease from the moment you walk in. Whether you’re coming in for your first gynecologic visit or just your first cervical cancer screening, here’s what you can expect.
What is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear is a quick and important screening tool used to check for abnormal cell changes on the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer. It’s a key part of preventive health care and is typically recommended for anyone with a cervix starting at age 21, regardless of sexual activity.
It is often part of a routine wellness or gynecologic exam and only takes a few minutes, but it can have a lifelong impact. Early detection means early treatment, and in many cases, prevention altogether.
What to Expect During Your Visit
When you come to Essex County OB/GYN, you’ll be cared for by one of our all-female providers, who will talk you through every step and answer any questions you have. You’ll change into a gown and lie back on the exam table. Your provider will gently insert a speculum to view the cervix, then a small brush or swab will be used to collect cells, which takes just seconds. The sample will be sent to a lab, and we will follow up with your results.
During the exam, you may feel a bit of pressure, but it should not be painful. If you ever feel uncomfortable or anxious, let us know. Your comfort is our priority.
You Don’t Need to Prepare
Let’s clear up a few common misconceptions. For your Pap smear:
- You don’t need to have had sex to get a Pap smear.
- You don’t need to shave or wax beforehand.
- You don’t need to dress a certain way.
- You don’t need to be nervous about what your body looks like.
Our team is here to care for your health, not judge your appearance, choices, or lifestyle. You just need to show up, and we’ll take care of the rest!
Our Commitment to Inclusive and Gender-Affirming Care
At Essex County OB/GYN, we proudly provide inclusive, gender-affirming care for all patients. We recognize that Pap smears can be particularly stressful or triggering for trans, nonbinary, or gender-diverse patients, and our team is committed to creating a safe and validating experience. We are here to listen, respect, and honor your experience because everyone deserves high-quality, compassionate care.
