Going Away to School? Don’t Forget This Important Health Checklist

Heading off to college or sending your teen for the first time? Between move-in lists, dorm decor, school supplies, and class schedules, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important parts of back-to-school prep: healthcare. Scheduling a visit with your OB/GYN before move-in day can help students feel more confident, prepared, and protected for the school year ahead. Here’s what to keep in mind before packing up the car.

Don’t Wait to Refill Your Birth Control

Running out of your prescription mid-semester isn’t ideal, especially when you’re far from home or juggling a new routine. If you’re currently on birth control, before you head off to school, make sure your prescription is up to date and ask your provider about refills or extended supplies that can carry you through the semester. You may also want to consider long-acting options, like IUDs or implants, for more low-maintenance coverage. Have an open conversation with your provider about which options best suit your lifestyle and needs!

Stay On Top of STI Testing

College often brings new independence and new relationships, which means it’s extra important to prioritize sexual health. STI testing is:

  • Quick, routine, and confidential
  • Recommended even if you don’t have symptoms
  • Important if you’re sexually active with new or multiple partners

Making it part of your regular health routine helps you stay informed and protected.

Know What Services Are Available on Campus

Every college health center is different, and some may have limited resources. Before school starts, take some time to find out if your campus’s student health center offers birth control prescriptions and counseling, STI testing and treatment, emergency contraception, and/or LGBTQIA+ affirming care and mental health services. Know where your health center is located and who to call if you need support while on campus. Remember, you can always call our team here at Essex County OB/GYN with questions, too. We’re happy to help!

Whether you’re preparing for your first semester or sending your teen off for the first time with a checklist in hand, don’t skip the conversation about reproductive healthcare. Our team is here to support you with information, compassionate care, and a plan that fits your life. Schedule a visit at Essex County OB/GN today, so you (or your teen) can head to campus feeling confident and covered.
